Michael’s music recommendations.

Lucero

  • Genre: Alt-Country, Rock
  • Lucero is a great alt-country rock band from Memphis Tennessee. They have a history of touring 250+ days a year and put on an amazing live show. I am surprised that a band this good hasn’t caught on. I recommend checking out Rebels, Rogues, and Sworn Brothers, Nobody’s Darlings, and Tennessee. Fans of Steve Earle, Hank III and the Drive By Truckers are sure to enjoy Lucero.

KMFDM

  • Genre: Industrial, EBM, Metal
  • KMFDM are a heavy industrial band that has been around since 1984. They have tons of releases with ranging styles from dance-synth to crunchy metal guitars. They latest release, Brimborium, is a very dancable remix album featuring the talents of Die Krupps, Combichrist, Velox and many others. KMFDM, like many industrial acts, are heavy on messages of political dissent. The heavy lyrical content matches up with the energy and flow of their music.

The Slackers

  • Genre: Ska
  • The Slackers are an amazingly energetic and talented ska outfit from New York. They have a sound that is a mix of 80s ska and traditional ska. They are definitely not part of the turn of the century ska-pop-punk genre. The Slackers seem to be constantly touring the globe. I would highly recommend catching them when they come to your town. I can pretty much recommend any of their albums. Peculiar and Wasted Days are among my favorites. They have a new album, Self Medicated, due out in April.

Peeping Tom

  • Genre: Rock, Alternative, Patton
  • Peeping Tom is a Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle) project that took many years to complete. Patton collaborated with a diverse array of artists and the release is a refreshing epic. The album features Dan the Automator, Norah Jones, Dub Trio, Kid Koala, Massive Attack, and many more. Their live show to support the album was insane. The lineup included Dan the Automator, Bebel Gilberto, Dub Trio as well as Butterscotch, an 18 year old who blew the crowd away with her human beatbox solo.

Bitter:Sweet

  • Genre: Electronic, Ambient, Downbeat
  • Bitter:Sweet is an electronic male/female duo out of LA, whose release The Mating Game will surely fit into your ambient & downbeat playlists right next to Nightmares on Wax and the Thievery Corporation. This group has been enjoying tons of exposure on television shows and the like. I would much rather hear their grooves in a cool bar rather than on TV. Hopefully it won’t be their ruin. Oh, and the companion release The Remix Game is definitely worthy of your ear-time.

8mm

  • Genre: Electronic, Ambient, Downbeat, Alt-Pop
  • 8mm is one of those lesser-known favs. Their self released albums and commendable MySpace marketing have garnered quite the following. Better yet, the album Songs to Love and Die By is a wonderfully produced alt-pop gem. Being a sucker for a great female vocalist, 8mm satisfies many moods. 8mm is one of my favorite bands to slip into a gift compilation cd.
